Updates and future of DevLand

After a long period without publishing anything we come back with a lot of news and changes.

It has been a long month of work but it has paid off. We have added some new features, such as an anonymous authentication system and the integration of the website with... a blockchain!

But let me tell you about it.

The land of the developers

Do you remember what I told you in the first published article? That I wanted to create a community for developers. Well, the objective has not changed, we have simply had time to work on it a lot.

Yes, we have. Because that's one of the main differences, that I'm not alone anymore but there is a team of people supporting me and maintaining the project.

Our goal at the beginning was to create a Spanish-speaking community, and Spanish-speaking users will continue to be our priority, but we have to internationalize the community and allow developers from anywhere in the world to join us. That is one of the changes, but it is perhaps the least noticeable.

The platform will remain what we had intended, but we are bringing some changes and additions.

We want to not only create a space where developers can interact, communicate and learn, but where we can really grow professionally and personally. The home of our own professional family on the internet.

The land of developers. DevLand.

DevLand Network

A community is nothing more than a network, a network of people who collaborate with each other to coordinate in some aspect, usually coexistence. That's why the first thing we will do is to provide our website, DevLand Network, with social network and content functionalities, as we had originally planned.

Soon you will be able to create a profile and make it as public as you wish managing the privacy options. You will be able to add all the information you want to share about yourself, be it vocational, professional or academic.

We hope that, in addition to putting developers in contact with each other, the profile can be used as a showcase for job search and professional promotion.

In this profile we will also be able to publish our content, as we have already mentioned. Content that other users can then read, comment on and interact with in different ways.

But we will not stop there. We know how much work it takes to create this content. The reward of the exposure received that any massive platform already offers is not bad, but there are times when we take our work to an extra step of quality (investing the corresponding time) without really getting any reward.

Therefore, one of the key features will be the ability to monetize (if we want) what we publish using various methods. And to do so we will rely on nothing more and nothing less than blockchain technology.

The blockchain

Most people when they hear blockchain associate it with cryptocurrencies, if they recognize the word at all.

Blockchain technology is relatively new, barely a decade, and although it was "already a thing" before, Bitcoin was the first successful global implementation of this technology. It is normal then that it is associated with cryptocurrencies and trading operations, since that has been its main use until now.

However, this is a technology with infinitely greater potential. I will make a brief summary for those less knowledgeable on the subject:

Blockchain is used to store accounting entries in cryptocurrency applications, just as a bank uses a relational database to store its accounting entries. But just like relational databases, its function is to work with data, not money.

Blockchain is a new way of managing data. A new type of database, but with some peculiar characteristics:

  • It is decentralized, the data is distributed among the nodes that are part of the network and there is no single copy of the data but each node keeps its copy. Likewise, there is no node with more power or privileges than another (unlike other distributed environments that are not decentralized).
  • It is immutable, once a piece of data is added to the blockchain and validated it can never be deleted (unless it is a piece of data specifically programmed to do so). Any attempt to modify a piece of data on the blockchain is automatically discovered and can be discarded if consensual.
  • It is publicly validated, any individual can be part of the network and check its correct functioning. The network itself, through cryptographic protocols and the collaboration of its users, is responsible for verifying that all nodes maintain the same copy of the data.

In short, it is a database shared among several entities (whether individuals, companies, organizations or governments) without these entities having to trust each other to ensure the operation of the database.

This opens the door to a new web, the web 3.0.

Moving towards a decentralized web model

The Web 2.0 revolution meant that users could interact and build the content of the web. However, this meant (and still means today) putting the content we create and our personal data in the hands of third parties. The Web 3.0 revolution, or decentralized web, tries to give back to those users the control over their interactions and data.

Web 3.0 comes hand in hand with blockchain and other P2P technologies, and the paradigm it represents is that of a horizontal rather than vertical internet, where control once again resides with the users rather than with the companies offering services. All this by means of cryptography and public node networks.

And that approach is what we are going to give to DevLand Network.

Stellar integration

We have integrated the platform with Stellar. An open, fast and simple blockchain. Designed to manage payments with any type of currency and distributed registration of property either on physical or intellectual objects.

We have chosen Stellar for its simplicity in terms of integration and development on our side, for its ease of use by users and because transactions are extremely fast compared to other networks.

However, we are studying other alternatives, since for some of the functionalities we want to implement it may not be the best network (Stellar does not support smart contracts executed in a distributed way).

DevLand Points

And as last update...

We have created the DevLand Point (DEVP) token within the Stellar Network.

This token will serve as the primary payment currency within the DevLand Network, so that users can pay each other within the platform when consuming monetized content. But it won't stop there.

The token will also serve to reward users who collaborate with the creation of content, the development of the platform and its dissemination. Making them owners of a part of the platform.

Several uses will be added for the token, such as the ability to use it for governance, making stake of it.

We will also make a pre-sale of the token while we build the platform to finance infrastructure and external services costs that we require, as well as professionals that we do not have in the team.

------------------------------------------------------- -------------------
Max DEVP 1.000.000 DEVP
Pre-sale 150.000 DEVP
Funds for Release 1 50.000 DEVP
Funds for Release 2 50.000 DEVP
Funds for desarrollar Release 3 100.000 DEVP
Funds to grant liquidity 100.000 DEVP
Rewards and promotions 20.000 DEVP
Welcome bonus pool 500 DEVP
To be decided by voting 529.500 DEVP
------------------------------------------------------- -------------------

As you can see from the table above, the total DEVP that exists and will ever exist is 1,000,000 DEVP. We have allocated part of this total to different functions but there are still 529,500 DEVP to be allocated. The use to which they are put will be decided by vote.

The next frontier

As you can see, we have reserved funds for releases 2 and 3 of the platform. We have surprises in store for a somewhat more distant future, but we don't want to rush things.

For now we'll just say that we don't want to remain a social network with content monetization.

We really want to provide useful functionalities specifically for developers and other technical IT profiles, that take advantage of the potential of decentralized models. Let's change DeFi for DeLearn, for DeDev, for DeCloud...

We'll be back soon with more news.

Best regards!
